On this day in 1963, bassist and composer Charles Mingus recorded his unique solo album “Mingus Plays Piano” in New York City.Released just a few months after his masterpiece “The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady,” this is the only record to feature Mingus performing on his instrument of choice for composing.Mingus was a skilled, nuanced piano player. In fact, he had even studied under the legendary pianist Art Tatum while serving as the bassist in Tatum’s group. The true value of this album arguably lies in the bare-bones insight that it gives into Mingus’ compositional approach.
